Job purpose

The successful candidate will serve as a mid-level member of the Network Engineering team responsible for ensuring the continued operation and improvement of the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) VoIP infrastructure, which spans three continents.  Candidate will work closely with operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing VoIP infrastructure, including providing tier 3 support.  Candidate will work with project teams to design and implement significant upgrades to network and VoIP systems.  Candidate must be capable of requirements analysis and preparing designs and plans for VoIP systems, expansions and upgrades in order to provide connectivity according to customer requirements.  Candidate maintains technical expertise in all areas of VoIP and networking technologies including network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing such as routers, switches, firewalls, WAN accelerators, VoIP systems, and physical cabling infrastructure.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide support to enterprise subject matter expert (SME) for VoIP systems.
  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP VoIP infrastructure.
  • Install, configure, maintain and document VoIP system hardware and software suites at multiple sites.
  • Document all VoIP system changes.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide engineering support for new VoIP deployments, enhancements, or modifications
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical USAP infrastructure.
  • May deploy to Antarctica at manager's discretion (typically between 6 to 8 weeks in a given year) to assist with installations, problem solving, or information gathering.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP VoIP environment with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Rotate 24x7 on-call support with other team members as required.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Excellent communication ability and the ability to work well with others in a diplomatic fashion is an essential skill.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 7 years or more of professional experience; or 5 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered an expert, authority in discipline.
  • Extensive demonstrated expertise with the design and deployment of recent versions of Cisco Unified Communications Manager
  • Extensive demonstrated expertise with recent versions of Cisco Unity/Unity Connection
  • Demonstrated expertise designing new VoIP systems or upgrades to existing VoIP systems.
  • Expertise in primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol (IPv4) and other common network standards.
  • Expertise demonstrating the ability to design, implement and support enterprise network switched and routed architectures.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience with network management applications and related protocols such as SNMP and Netflow.
  • Experience with traffic shaping devices, WAN protocol accelerators and bandwidth management.
  • Ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • Understanding of and experience applying Information Security concepts to core network infrastructure and data transport.
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively through verbal and written means in a timely manner.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.

Desired skills

  • Valid and current Cisco certifications including CCNP Voice, CCNP - Collaboration, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE are desired and preferred.
  • Very strong experience with Cisco based VoIP infrastructure implementation and configuration.
  • Deep knowledge of QoS, IPSec, VPN technologies and best practices.
  • Experience with the configuration and operation of Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimizers is desired.
  • Experience with IPv6 is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Palo Alto firewalls is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Cisco ASA firewalls is desired.
  • Experience with Network Access Control (NAC) is desired.
  • Experience with IP Address space management is desired.
  • Experience with BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and static routing is desired.
  • Experience with IPAM solutions is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of VTC systems is desired.
  • Experience with data transmission over satellites is desired.
  • Experience with the unique requirements of operating in Antarctica is desired.

Physical requirements

  • Deployment to Antarctica may be required at the discretion of management (approximately 6 to 8 weeks / year). The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

  • All expenses paid while deployed including meals, lodging, cold-weather gear, tools, and travel to/from Antarctica.
