Job purpose

Position is within the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) Information Technology and Communications department (IT&C). This position may have the opportunity to deploy, on a temporary assignment, to Antarctica as determined by management. This position will require to be very experienced in the administration and maintenance of SQL Databases.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintains the data integrity and security of the USAP's primary business application databases through rigorous application of standards and quality assurance procedures. 
  • Works closely with Business Applications developers, Quality Assurance testing and support staffs as well as both internal and external customers.
  • Conducts necessary technology research; recommends, deploys and configures new hardware and software in support of USAP databases.
  • Serves as the primary contact for resolving database performance, security and support issues.
  • Works as a primary member of the IT&C server systems administration team, and as such, requires significant systems administrative duties in conjunction with database administration.  The successful candidate will be a utility player capable and comfortable handling multiple roles as the job requires.
  • Responsible for backups and restorations of all USAP associated databases.
  • Performs quality control audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper usage of data in tables and various support tools, such as database dictionaries.
  • Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls.
  • Provides appropriate consulting, interfacing, and training for information systems users.
  • Assists with the creation of policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management; monitors transaction activity and database utilization.
  • Defines documents and performs routine database maintenance and administrative functions, including index maintenance and updating of various tables.
  • Provides support to end users and Development and QA staff on all database issues.
  • Provides server and client support for specialized production business applications.
  • Reports regularly to the Manager on operational problems, plans and progress.
  • Aids in the production of all system, security and user documentation for server and database systems.
  • Required to provide 24X7 support and share responsibility for on-call rotation as required by manager. This rotation will include handling Systems Administrator tasking and managing a work order ticket queue during periods of on-call duty.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • Employment is dependent on successfully clearing a public trust clearance.
  • Strong SQL experience is required.
  • Expertise in database security, standard configuration, NIST compliance and patch management is required.
  • Extensive administrative experience with Windows 2012/2016 Server, including practical experience with the virtualization of SQL databases is required.
  • BS/BA degree is preferred. Degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field with emphasis in database design preferred. Equivalent, relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of two years of hands-on experience as a database administrator with a strong working knowledge of relational database systems is preferred.
  • Familiar with SSRS.
  • Knows SQL Server TDE and recovery.
  • Scripting and SSIS package knowledge is highly desired.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting is highly desired.
  • Experience with Veeam is desired.
  • Experience with VMWare ESXi is desired.
  • Experience with IBM Maximo is highly desired.
  • SQL database certifications are highly desired.
  • Primavera skills are desired.
  • Project management skills are desired.
  • Experience with MySQL and Postgresql highly desired.
  • Familiarity with USAP database schemas is desired.
  • Familiarity with existing USAP websites and infrastructure desired.

Physical requirements

  • Deployment may be required in this position. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.

  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

Position Expectations

  • This is a full-time position located in Centennial, CO.
  • All expenses paid while deployed including meals, lodging, cold-weather gear, tools, and travel to/from Antarctica.
