Job purpose

The System Administrator position performs critical IT activities in support of the Range Operations Contract at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility.  This position is responsible for the administration, maintenance and troubleshooting of all servers, network operating systems, backup systems, directory services, virtual clusters and production database servers. This position ensures that all systems meet the program standards for the production environments. The System Administrator will operate as a member of a highly motivated IT teams to support highly complex LAN/WAN (Local Area Network and Wide Area Network) projects involving the design, analysis, maintenance and implementation of LAN/WAN equipment and networks.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

  • Maintains smooth operation of servers and multi-user computer systems, including coordination with network administrators.
  • Maintains and conforms IT assets to program security policies and support regular audits.
  • Interacts with IT team, engineering, and operations users and evaluates vendor products.
  • Makes recommendations to purchase hardware and software, coordinates installation and provides systems backup recovery.
  • Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.
  • Maintains evaluates Virtual Systems Clusters (Application & Data) for high availability and resource management.
  • Implement and maintain access controls through directory services and other program requirements.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 7 years of professional experience; or 4 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software installation, testing and operation.
  • Knowledge of application of computer software for automating highly diverse agency/organization activities.
  • High level of knowledge of either or both Microsoft Server and Linux (Redhat, CentOS ...)
  • Experience with VMware, HyperV, Cisco is preferred.
  • Capability and capacity of various software products/communication utilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles of data communications and telecommunications.
  • Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Documentation writing skills to create design, configuration, policy, planning, test, product, and user documents.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • Ability to receive and maintain a US government Clearance.

Working environment

 

  • This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines." And move the largely sedentary role to the physical requirements section.

Position Expectations

This is a full-time position. Monday-Friday 8a-5pm
