Job Purpose

The Network Administrator (Marine) position is responsible for maintaining all network systems and components on board the research vessels. Position should be knowledgeable in a variety of systems, including routers, switches, servers, computers and printers that may be onboard the vessel. Person will also assist scientists with computer systems and science equipment. This position may deploy onboard the research vessels for scientific cruises as required. Additional time may be required to support planning and other activities in Denver and/or Chile.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The primary purpose of the position is to provide system administration of Microsoft Windows and Linux servers. This includes providing analysis of business and management problems in terms of system and user department requirements.
  • Creates, implements, and updates project plans, documentation, schedules, deliverables and communication plans for assigned projects.
  • Applies required security patches and maintains approved standard configurations.
  • Diagnoses system problems and provides creative and thoughtful technical solutions.
  • Monitors system health and performance and implements corrections to improve performance and manageability.
  • Resolving complex and non-routine hardware, software, operating system and integration problems that relate to the supported systems.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science or related field. Experience may be substituted for degree. Preferred: Degree plus some graduate work.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of Linux and Windows administration experience
  • Experience upgrading server operating systems, tech refresh, imaging, patch management, configuration management, antivirus management, security certificate install and renewal.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional level technical troubleshooting experience: desktop and workstation hardware, as well as software

  • Working knowledge of Windows DNS/DHCP
  • Working knowledge of SCCM/MECM
  • Working knowledge of Network Attached Storage

  • Working knowledge of Shell Scripting, including Python
  • Working knowledge of GIS software
  • Experience with Satellite Systems

Physical Requirements

  • Deployment may be required in this position. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations, and psychological examination, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
