Job purpose

The successful candidate will serve as a mid-level member of the Network Engineering team responsible for ensuring the continued operation and improvement of the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) network infrastructure, which spans three continents. Candidate will work closely with operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing network infrastructure, including providing tier-2 support. Candidate maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing such as routers, switches, firewalls, WAN accelerators, VoIP systems, and physical cabling infrastructure.

Duties and responsibilities

Design and Implement Enterprise-level Improvements:

  • Develop and implement an enterprise Quality of Service architecture.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP infrastructure.
  • Create complete end-to-end plans including designs and/or upgrades for enterprise-wide LANs/WANs within the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).
  • Install, configure, maintain and document network hardware and software suites at multiple sites.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP network environment with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Develop documentation for all network changes.

Support Network Operations:

  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide engineering support to IT for new deployments, enhancements, or modifications to IT systems, both on and off Ice.
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical USAP infrastructure.
  • Periodically deploy to Antarctica (typically between 6 to 8 weeks in a year) to assist with installations, problem solving, or information gathering.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Rotate 24x7 on-call support with other team members as required.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • US citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • Expertise in primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol (IPv4) and other common network standards.
  • Expertise demonstrating the ability to design, implement and support enterprise network switched and routed architectures.
  • Experience designing and operating networks using routing protocols such as BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, and static routing.
  • Experience designing new systems or upgrades to existing network systems.
  • Experience developing Concepts of Operation, Requirements, Basis of Design, and critical design documents and drawings.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience with network management applications and related protocols such as SNMP and Netflow.
  • Experience with traffic shaping devices, WAN protocol accelerators and bandwidth management.
  • Experience with wireless networking technologies in the 802.11 protocol suite.
  • Ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • Understanding of and experience applying Information Security concepts to core network infrastructure and data transport.
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.

Desired skills

  • BS/BA degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field with emphasis in computer networking preferred.
  • Current & valid Cisco certifications including CCNP, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE are desired and preferred.
  • Knowledge of QoS, IPSec, VPN technologies and best practices.
  • Experience with IPv6 is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Palo Alto firewalls is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Cisco ASA firewalls is desired.
  • Experience with Network Access Control (NAC) is desired.
  • Experience with IP Address space management is desired.
  • Experience with BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and static routing is desired.
  • Experience with IPAM solutions is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and operation of Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimizers is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and operation of Riverbed SteelCentral NetExpress is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and operation of NetBrain is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of VTC systems is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers is desired.
  • Experience with data transmission over satellites is desired.
  • Experience with Zabbix is desired.
  • Experience configuring a data center to support the unique requirements of SANs and Virtual Machines is desired.
  • Experience with the unique requirements of operating in Antarctica is desired.
  • Experience with Project management, cost estimation, cost analysis, scheduling, tasking, staffing, and reporting is desired.

Physical requirements

  • Deployment to Antarctica may be required at the discretion of management (approximately 6 to 8 weeks / year). The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

Position Expectations

  • All expenses paid while on-ice meals, lodging, medical, gear, travel to and from Antarctica.
