Job Purpose

This is an entry-level position. The Operations Support Officer (OSO) provides flight control and training support to International Space Station (ISS) Operations within the NASA Johnson Space Center Flight Operations Directorate for IVA Operations, in-flight maintenance and crew systems support.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The candidate will be required to complete a training and skill certification process and attain a mission control center console position certification. Additional certifications will be required to train astronauts, cosmonauts, flight controllers, and International Partner personnel.
  • Specific duties associated with flight control positions include maintaining a safe environment for astronauts onboard ISS to work and live; monitoring of real-time status and performance of ISS systems; controlling ISS system operations from mission control; reporting status and anomalies to mission managers; determining mission impacts and implementing corrective actions; test and verification of operational products and analysis; integrating requirements with other systems and organizations; and the development and maintenance of operations products such as crew procedures, flight rules, console procedures, and technical references.
  • Individuals in this position may interface directly with the NASA customer, subcontractors, ISS program personnel, International Partners, and commercial vendors.
  • Night, weekend, and holiday work may be required for flight support.
  • As a certified Instructor the candidate will be required to develop training materials, participate in and conduct simulations, and instruct crew utilizing a variety of media and facilities.
  • Al other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • US citizenship is required.
  • Must be a recent college graduate or be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a completed degree in Engineering, Physics, or Math by August 2022.
  • 0-2 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-time operations.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to participate in a team environment, and the ability to function well under pressure are mandatory.
  • The candidate must possess a demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and coordinate a wide range of tasks.
  • Must be able to meet JSC requirements for certification as a Flight Controller.
  • Must be able to apply for and successfully receive/maintain the required security clearance.
  • Must be able to pass an Air Force Class III physical.
  • Previous experience with crewed vehicles, aerospace production and maintenance or use of hand tools is desired.

Working Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Requirements

  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, this position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
