Job purpose

The Network Administrator (Marine) position is responsible for maintaining all network systems and components on board the research vessels. Position should be knowledgeable in a variety of systems, including routers, switches, servers, computers and printers that may be onboard the vessel. Person will also assist scientists with computer systems and science equipment. This position deploys onboard the research vessels for scientific cruise as required (approximately 35% of the year). Additional time may be required to support planning and other activities in Denver and/or Chile. This position will also assist in the recruiting of personnel to fill other marine positions as the need arises due to turnover or ship schedule needs. *START DATE 10/3/2022*

Duties and responsibilities

  • The primary purpose of the position is to provide system administration of Microsoft Windows and Linux servers. This includes providing analysis of business and management problems in terms of system and user department requirements.
  • Create, implement, and update project plans, documentation, schedules, deliverables and communication plans for assigned projects.
  • Apply required security patches.
  • Analyze source documents, data base structure and management report requirements.
  • Diagnose system problems and provides creative and thoughtful technical solutions.
  • Monitor system health and performance and implements corrections to improve performance and manageability.
  • Resolve complex and non-routine hardware, software, operating system and integration problems that relate to the supported systems.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science or related field. Experience may be substituted for degree. Preferred: Degree plus some graduate work.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of Linux and Windows administration experience
  • Experience upgrading server operating systems, tech refresh, imaging, patch management, configuration management, antivirus management, security certificate install and renewal.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional level technical troubleshooting experience: desktop and workstation hardware, as well as software
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.

Physical requirements

  • Deployment will be required in this position. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations, and psychological examination, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.

  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

  • Periodic deployments aboard vessels throughout the year as scheduled by the Vessel IT Manager
