GHG Corporation is contracted to supply IT Services for the United States Antarctic Program through the National Science Foundation.
Come bring your Systems Administrator experience to Antarctica and support American Scientists, such as biologists, geologists, oceanographers, physicists, astronomers, glaciologists, and meteorologists conduct experiments not reproducible in any other place in the world.

Location: McMurdo, Antarctica
Work Status: US Citizen (as required by the United States NSF)
Deployment: December 2017 - April 2018 (possibly can be extended)
Salary: DOE, plus uplift. All expenses paid while on-ice: meals, lodging, medical, gear, travel to and from Antarctica. (*Salary may vary due to contract restraints)

Title: Telecommunications Technician, Senior

Performs maintenance and repair of all inside and outside cable plant at USAP stations. The position is responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of the entire telephone and PBX systems for the station, fiber/copper connectivity and call management systems for 1200+ users. The position provides critical required tasking such as fiber optic splicing, PBX programming and providing assistance with network and communications troubleshooting on the station.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide phone system management.

Assist communications Department with Black Island related events.

Survey all OSP cables and hardware for damage and schedule repairs as necessary.

Run current list-ups on all PBX's and file for summer reference.

Provide voice/data services to outlying field sites.

Provide support for testing and implementation of (802.11b) wireless LAN devices. Install and repair McMurdo telephones.

Install and maintain inside and outside CATV, UTP, and Fiber distribution plant. Install and maintain LAN cable drops & runs.

Maintain Automated Teller Machines and associated network equipment.

Update cable plant optical fiber and UTP as-builts.

Program and maintain PBXs at Telco, CSEC, and MRSF. Provide OSP and ISP support, engineering and estimates. Maintain Telco inventory and records.

Support PairGain bridges and Cisco wide-area communications.

Install and maintain all network transmission and distribution media, including twisted pair and optical fiber.

Provide network management and maintenance support for USES transmission network (GDC MS). Provide daily status monitoring of all remote sites.

Install, maintain, and administer PBX hardware and software in McMurdo, CSEC. Maintain up to date cable records.

Update SOPs as needed.

Provide installation and maintenance support for T-1 and HDSL transmission facilities.

Maintain and report monthly performance statistics.

Produce monthly long-distance call accounting reports.

Assists Communications Supervisor in annual departmental inventory and re-supply ordering. ensures that work areas meet all ASC and USAP safety standards.

Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.

Performs other duties as required.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Continued education in technical courses pertaining to telecommunications electronics preferred.

Certifications and/or Licensing Requirements: None Required. 

Training: None Required.

Experience:  Minimum of four years experience in telecommunications systems is required. Experience with PBXs, wiring standards and protocols required. Solid understanding of logical and systematic troubleshooting techniques is required. Excellent command of computers and software used in modern telecommunications facilities is required. Familiarity with the use of telecommunications test equipment, OTDRs, bit error rate testers and communications analyzers is required. Familiarity with electronics equipment cabling and standard installation wiring practices is required. Minimum two years experience maintaining digital communications equipment preferred.

Physical and/or Other Specific Requirements: Deployment may be required in this position at discretion of management. If required, the individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations, and psychological examination for winter-over positions, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action. Complies with applicable USAP/ASC safety, environmental, health, and waste management policies and procedures. US citizenship or permanent residency required.
