Job purpose

Serve as a member of the Network Engineering team responsible for supporting authorized and approved project work and supporting the Network Operations team to ensure the continued operation and improvement of the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) network infrastructure, which spans three continents.  Candidate will work closely with Network Operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing network infrastructure, including providing tier 3 support.  Candidate will work with project teams to design and implement significant upgrades to network and VoIP systems.  Candidate must be capable of requirements analysis and preparing designs and plans for network systems, expansions and upgrades in order to provide connectivity according to customer requirements.  Candidate maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing such as routers, switches, firewalls, WAN accelerators, VoIP systems, and physical cabling infrastructure.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide network operations support.
  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP infrastructure.
  • Create complete end-to-end plans including designs and/or upgrades for enterprise-wide LANs/WANs within the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).
  • Develop Concept of Operations documents, Requirements documents, design documents and drawings.
  • Install, configure, maintain and document network hardware and software suites at multiple sites.
  • Provide documentation for all network changes.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide engineering support to IT for new deployments, enhancements, or modifications to IT systems, both on and off Ice.
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical USAP infrastructure.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP network environment with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Rotate 24x7 on-call support with other team members as required.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Excellent communication ability and the ability to work well with others in a diplomatic fashion is an essential skill.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 9 years or more of professional experience; or 7 years of professional experience with a related Master's degree.  
  • Considered an expert, authority in discipline.
  • Strong expertise in primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol (IPv4) and other common network standards.
  • Strong expertise demonstrating the ability to design, implement and support enterprise network switched and routed architectures.
  • Experience designing and operating networks using routing protocols such as BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, and static routing.
  • Experience designing new systems or upgrades to existing network systems.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience with network management applications and related protocols such as SNMP and Netflow.
  • Ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • Understanding of and experience applying Information Security concepts to core network infrastructure and data transport.
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.
  • Valid and current Cisco certifications including CCNP, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE are desired and preferred.
  • Strong experience with Cisco based VoIP infrastructure implementation and configuration.

  • Experience with Zenoss is desired.

  • Experience configuring a data center to support the unique requirements of SANs and Virtual Machines is desired.
  • Experience with the unique requirements of operating in Antarctica is desired.
  • Experience with Project management, cost estimation, cost analysis, scheduling, tasking, staffing, and reporting is desired.

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Expectations

This is a full-time position and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Work is to be performed at the ASC facility at 7400 S. Tucson Way, Centennial, Colorado, during normal business hours.

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: June 19th 2017- September 29th 2017

No travel is expected for this position.
