Job purpose

Responsible for providing communications support for the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC).


Duties and responsibilities

  • Works with the ASC Communications Specialist and Editor-Journalist to perform communications tasking for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).
  • Writes, edits and prepares internal materials, including company publications, group emails, and other internal documents.
  • Writes and edits science articles in assistance to The Antarctic Sun journalist.
  • Creates PowerPoint presentations about the USAP for internal and public use.
  • Organizes and manages education outreach materials, including carrying large packages to/from shipping and receiving.
  • Creates original graphic art and publications using digital applications.
  • Understands the guidelines and learns the technical processes for uploading images to the USAP Photo Library, enters accurate metadata and writes thorough and concise captions.
  • Will organize and host large events, being able to effectively stand in front of an audience with poise and enthusiasm.
  • Will be able to use digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, recording devices and work in a multi-media platform.
  • Will be able to respond to the media and public inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Complies with all applicable ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • Employees and contractors may, in the course of performing their official duties, have access to a wide variety of personal identifiable and sensitive information (PII/SI) electronically and in hard copy. Personal and sensitive data including Social Security numbers, date and place of birth, demographic data, home addresses/telephone numbers/personal email addresses, passport numbers, bank account numbers, performance reviews, reviewer identity tied to performance reviews, unfunded proposals, proprietary parts of funded proposals, and other similar information should be protected according to Federal regulations and United States Antarctic Program policy, and only disclosed in accordance with the United States Antarctic program requirements.
  • All other duties as assigned.



  • The candidate must have science communication skills.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in photography, with a minimum of two years' experience with photo manipulation software required.
  • Non-technical experience with video production and story-board design is desired. This position would work closely with The Antarctic Sun editor and USAP videographer to transcribe interviews and create audio-visual materials.
  • Familiarity with Adobe CS products, (Lightroom, PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator) preferred.
  • The candidate must have photo manipulation skills to quickly and easily correct an image's color, levels, and brightness, without destroying the integrity of the image.
  • Must have strong organizational skills; must be multi-task oriented; must be capable of working without supervision after appropriate training and orientation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • The successful candidate will have a gregarious personality that interacts well with others.

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Expectations

This is a full-time position and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Work is to be performed at the ASC facility at 7400 S. Tucson Way, Centennial, Colorado, during normal business hours.

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: July 10, 2017 September 29, 2017 (480 hours).

No travel is expected for this position.
