Job purpose

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Network Engineering team responsible for ensuring the continued operation and improvement of the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) VoIP infrastructure, which spans three continents.  Candidate will work closely with operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing VoIP infrastructure, including providing tier 3 support.  Candidate will work with project teams to design and implement significant upgrades to VoIP systems.  Candidate must be capable of requirements analysis and preparing designs and plans for network systems, expansions and upgrades in order to provide connectivity according to customer requirements.  Candidate maintains technical expertise in all areas of VoIP and communications systems and infrastructure including phone, video teleconferencing systems, software based end-user communications systems etc

Duties and responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for all USAP VoIP systems.
  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP VoIP infrastructure.
  • Develop engineering design package that include complete end-to-end plans including designs and/or upgrades for enterprise-wide VoIP infrastructure within the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).
  • Update and correct all existing VoIP related documentation.
  • Develop step-by-step procedures for the management and operation of USAP VoIP systems.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide VoIP engineering support to IT for new deployments, enhancements, or modifications to VoIP systems, both on and off Ice.
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical VoIP infrastructure.
  • Periodically deploys to Antarctica (if deployed, may be between 6 to 8 weeks in a given year) to assist with installations, problem solving, or information gathering.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP VoIP infrastructure with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Rotate 24x7 on-call support with other team members as required.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Excellent communication ability and the ability to work well with others in a diplomatic fashion is an essential skill.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 5 years or more of professional experience; or 3 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
  • Obtain a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP-Collaboration) certificate within one year of employment if not already possessed
  • Expertise demonstrating the ability to design, implement, and support Cisco based VoIP infrastructures at the enterprise level
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco Unified Communications Manager
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining Cisco Voice Gateways
  • Experience designing new systems or upgrades to existing VoIP systems.
  • Experience developing engineering design packages.
  • Ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • Working knowledge of primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol and other common network standards
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.

Desired Skills:

  • Current and valid Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP-Voice or CCNP-Collaboration) certificate
  • Other current and valid Cisco certifications, including CCNP, CCDA, or CCDP are desired and preferred
  • Knowledge of QoS as it relates to VoIP and Collaboration
  • Experience with IPv6 is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers is desired.
  • Experience with data transmission over satellites is desired.
  • Experience with the unique requirements of operating in Antarctica is desired.

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical requirements

The individual in this position must be capable of successfully completing a physical and dental examination as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica

This is a full-time position and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Some travel may be expected for this position.
