Job purpose

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Network Engineering team responsible for supporting authorized and approved project work and supporting the Network Operations team to ensure the continued operation and improvement of the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) network infrastructure, which spans three continents.


Duties and responsibilities

Candidate must be able to work collaboratively and interact well with a small team to ensure continued operations of the enterprise network.

Candidate will work closely with Network Operations team members to operate, repair, and improve existing network infrastructure, including providing tier 3 support. 

Candidate must have a working knowledge of networking concepts and technologies, including routing and switching, security, and network monitoring systems.  Candidate must demonstrate effective troubleshooting techniques. 

Specific tasks include:

  • Provide tier 2 support to internal customers.
  • Provide tier 3 network operations support to other members of the Network Operations team.
  • Take ownership of assigned and approved trouble-tickets and drive them to completion.
  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Follow Change Control procedures when making any configuration change to the USAP network infrastructure.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP network environment with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP infrastructure.
  • Install, configure, maintain and document network hardware and software suites at multiple sites.
  • Provide detailed documentation for all proposed network changes.
  • Update existing documentation to reflect all implemented changes.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide engineering support to IT for new deployments, enhancements, or modifications to IT systems, both on and off Ice.
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical USAP infrastructure.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Rotate 24x7 on-call support with other team members as required.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • All other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, with 8 - 12 years or more of professional experience; or 6 - 10 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. 
  • Current and valid Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certificate, or better.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and collaborative fashion.
  • Expertise in primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol (IPv4) and other common network standards.
  • Expertise designing, implementing and supporting enterprise network switched and routed architectures.
  • Experience designing and operating networks using routing protocols such as EIGRP and static routing.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience with network management applications and related protocols such as SNMP and Netflow.
  • The ability to effectively complete work in a timely manner.
  • The ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio.


***The individual in this position must be capable of successfully completing a physical and dental examination as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.  ***

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical requirements

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required.  This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing as necessary.  This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds
