Job purpose

The LAN/WAN Administrator (Marine) position shall be responsible for maintaining and operating the various networks and communications systems onboard the research vessels in support of the science activities being conducted. Person shall be knowledgeable in network systems and satellite communications systems being used for communication s between ship and CONUS. This position will also assist in the recruiting of personnel to fill other marine positions as the need arises due to turnover or ship schedule needs. This position is based at Headquarters but is required to deploy onboard the research vessels approximately 25% of the time.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Acts as a consultant to customer departments in analyzing, planning and implementing infrastructure projects.
  • Creates, implements, and updates project plans, documentation, schedules, deliverables and communication plans for assigned projects.
  • Analysis, diagnosis, and problem solving
  • Analyzes source documents, data base structure and management report requirements.
  • Diagnoses system problems and provides creative and thoughtful technical solutions.
  • Monitors system health and performance and implements corrections to improve performance and manageability.
  • Resolving complex and non-routine hardware, software, operating system and integration problems that relate to the supported systems.
  • Perform Technical Changes
  • Experience as a system Microsoft Windows systems
  • All other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science or related field. Experience may be substituted for degree. Preferred: Degree plus some graduate work.
  • 5 years of related experience


  • Technical Capacity.

  • Problem Solving/Analysis.
  • High proficiency in Linux operating system administration.

Physical requirements

Deployment may be required in this position at discretion of management. If required, the individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations, and psychological examination for winter-over positions, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action. Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure. US citizenship or permanent residence is required.

U.S. Citizenship is required. (As required by the United States National Science Foundation)
