Job purpose

Entry level flight controller responsible for managing all International Space Station (ISS) onboard inventory and stowage. ISO Flight Controllers use onboard and Mission Control Center (MCC) based item tracking tools and databases to track stowage onboard the ISS and prepare information and messages for the crew to execute. Visiting resupply vehicles routinely dock with ISS and the ISO Flight Controllers plan cargo operations and direct the crew in vehicle packing and unpacking. ISO Flight Controllers must understand and use engineering analysis, as well as identify crew time and volume constraints.

Duties and responsibilities

  • After successful completion of training and skill certification within approximately 18 months, provide real-time operations support from the Mission Control Center
  • Communicate with the onboard crew and previously flown crew members to determine operational improvements to crew activities
  • Integrate inputs from multiple teams and balance those requests against the priorities of the ISS Program
  • Execute geometrical analysis and choreography planning for visiting vehicle activities
  • Develop ground and on-orbit procedures and operational documentation
  • Prepare console support products and internal ISO Group documentation
  • Support technical meetings
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Engineering, Physics, or Math.
  • Candidate must demonstrate the ability to progress through a flight controller certification. Candidate must be able to apply technical knowledge and operational concepts to make effective decisions in a real-time and fast-paced operational environment.
  • Candidate should be a self-starter capable of excelling in a dynamic environment that requires him/her to work effectively both alone or as part of a team.
  • Past experience integrating across multiple areas, leading teams, negotiating win-win solutions, working well in the team environment, and customer service is required.
  • Attention to detail and strict adherence to deadlines is required along with the ability to successfully work/negotiate on a daily basis with multiple customers across NASA, the Commercial Providers, and the ISS International Partners.
  • The candidate must be able to effectively communicate and understand complex technical and operational issues as they relate to both the ISS and Commercial spacecraft.
  • Candidate is required to pass a standard flight controller physical examination and be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Candidate must be able to support infrequent travel domestically and internationally.
  • US Citizenship is required.

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical requirements

This is largely a sedentary role; however, this position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
