Job purpose

Performs cable installation, testing and repair in support of the McMurdo AIMS project.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Complete an escorted walk-thru of each room / fiber termination location prior to beginning fiber terminations for a specific cable run.
  • Support cable installation as needed.
  • Splice any damaged or failed cables in cable runs as needed.
  • Terminate fiber optic cable to fiber cartridges inside telecommunications rooms at both ends of the cable pathway.
  • Terminate copper cable to surge arrester inside telecommunications rooms at both ends of the cable pathway.
  • Dress fiber and copper cable in cable tray installed inside the telecommunications room.
  • Provide service loop outside telecommunications node.
  • Test terminated fiber strands
    • All testing shall be in accordance with the Subcontractor's outside plant testing procedures and all applicable ANSI/TIA standards.
    • Test all fiber strands using both an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and an Optical Power Meter (OPM) with associated launch cables.
      • OTDR tests shall be conducted under appropriate frequency and bandwidth, and provide sweep information as a portion of the acceptance process.
      • Power Meter tests shall provide end-to-end power loss for particular
    • All test results shall be saved and provided to Leidos for review and acceptance. Test results must be correlated with the appropriate cable, housing, and cartridge as labeled.
    • Correct deficiencies as noted by Leidos until cable segment is fully accepted by Leidos.
  • Test terminated copper cable pairs.
  • Create continuity within racks and cabinets for grounding and bonding system.
  • Deliver weekly status reports while on site
  • Ensures that work areas meet all ASC and USAP safety standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Continued education in technical courses pertaining to telecommunications electronics preferred.
  • Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI) ITS Installer/Technician certifications or similar is preferred.
  • Qualifications may be demonstrated by certifications from organizations such as:
    • Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI )
    • Fiber Optic Association (FOA)
    • Electronics Technicians Association (ETA)
    • Ortronics
    • Other recognized cable installer/tester organization 
  • US citizenship or permanent residence is required.

Physical requirements

Deployment may be required in this position at discretion of management.  If required, the individual in the position must successfully complete physical, dental, and psychological examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
