Job purpose

This is an entry level flight controller position. This position will involve all aspects of International Space Station (ISS) flight control, including systems monitoring, analysis, troubleshooting, flight rule and procedure development. This employee will also instruct ISS mechanisms and/or maintenance lessons to ISS crew members and flight controller personnel.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The employee will be expected to achieve certification as a Mission Control Center-Houston (MCC-H) Operations Support Officer (OSO) flight controller, and Space Station Training Facility (SSTF) Repair and Mechanism (RAM) Instructor.
  • Upon eventual certification, the individual must work with limited supervision on a team with other flight controllers or instructors.
  • During ISS operations the OSO position reports to the flight director and coordinates system operations and failure analysis with other ISS flight controllers and Mission Evaluation Room (MER) engineering personnel.
  • During ISS Expedition Crew training, instructors work with the Chief Training Officer (CTO) and the Crew to determine the best possible training curriculum.
  • During ISS Simulations the RAM instructor reports to the CTO and works with other SSTF instructors to provide realistic high stress training to flight controller personnel.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to relate well with other Flight Controllers, Instructors, and various ISS program personnel in a high-stress environment.
  • Experience reading and understanding detailed electrical, mechanical, and plumbing schematics or drawings is highly desired.
  • The candidate must be able to work occasional shift work, and some weekend/holiday work.
  • The position requires some domestic travel and may require international travel.
  • Successful candidates must be able to apply for and successfully receive and maintain a security clearance per eligibility.
  • US citizenship is required.

Working environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical requirements

This is largely a sedentary role; however, this position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
