Sample Extravehicular Activity Operations Safety Engineer Job Description

Extravehicular Activity Operations Safety Engineer

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Operations Safety engineers are responsible for identifying EVA safety hazards/risks, identifying appropriate controls, assuring the implementation of said controls, providing assurance of safety papers associated with EVA interfaces and operations, perform periodic flight/EVA readiness assessments, assuring the incorporation of EVA Safety requirements into new hardware/payload designs, and participating in real-time monitoring and execution of U.S. EVAs performed on the ISS. These functions are performed in direct support of the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) Directorate (NA) and the NASA JSC EVA Office (FA). EVA Ops Safety engineers are expected to become intimately familiar with the ISS vehicle layout and systems, the EVA suit and tools available for use on orbit, the U.S. airlock, EVA-applicable flight rules, EVA-applicable procedures, the EVA on-orbit operations environment, the EVA training regimen, and ISS integrated hazard reports pertaining to EVA operations and/or EVA interfaces. In support of real-time U.S. EVA activities, EVA Ops Safety engineers are expected to be able to perform shift work as necessary for 24/7 coverage of EVA Safety console duties. Occasional domestic and/or international travel obligations are expected to occur in support of payload reviews, hardware reviews, vendor visits, and/or International Partner (IP) coordination. Extensive oral and written communications are expected to occur with multiple layers of SAIC and NASA management, including briefings of EVA risks to NASA Headquarters Office of S&MA (OSMA). EVA Ops Safety engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the EVA operations planning and training community.

EVA Ops Safety engineers are expected to provide the assurance roll in current ISS Program efforts to update EMU Hazard Reports and FMEA/CIL. This will include occasional travel, will require knowledge of general system safety methodologies for hazard analysis, and will require a thorough understanding of ISS Program requirements for the safety review process.

EVA Ops Safety engineers are required to complete a training/certification curriculum, and once certified, serve as mentor to other EMU Safety or cross-training personnel during their on-the-job training. Additionally, EVA Ops Safety engineers may be asked to pursue certification in the secondary discipline of EVA Quality Engineering (QE), and complete all necessary training/certification curriculum. Once completed, the EVA Ops Safety engineer would be considered "cross-trained" in EVA QE and may be asked on occasions to perform tasks such as anomaly documentation/resolution, test readiness reviews, development of GMIPs, review of drawings, review of open items, and assessment of hardware deliverables.

Required Education/Background:
• Bachelors of Science in Engineering. Mechanical or Aerospace preferred.
• Candidate must be a US Citizen
Required skills:
• 2-3 years of experience with hazard/safety analysis and/or NASA Extracurricular Activity (EVA) hardware and operations
• Must possess strong analytical and data management skills.
• Must possess strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking and presentation skills.
• Experience in real-time operations monitoring.
• Working knowledge of International Space Station (ISS) hardware and/or EVA hardware and the operations thereof.
• Must possess the ability to work well in a team or independently.
• Must possess the ability to multitask while performing real-time monitoring of EVA activities.
• Must be willing and able to accommodate occasional shift-work in support of real-time EVA console operations as necessary.
• Must be willing to travel (< 5%), including possible international travel.

Desired Education/Experience:
• Proficient at independent study and data gathering.
• Experience developing/writing and/or providing technical assurance for hazard reports and other safety paperwork.
• Ability to speak out in adverse circumstances to bring concerns forward, assertive.
• Familiar with NASA, DOD or other industry safety, reliability, and quality requirements and processes.
• Familiar with safety or reliability related products such as FMEAs, and Fault Trees.
• Experience with real-time CORE room or MER/MCC support of EVA/EMU operations.
