Extravehicular Mobility Unit Safety Engineer Jobs at GHG Corporation
Sample Extravehicular Mobility Unit Safety Engineer Job Description
Extravehicular Mobility Unit Safety Engineer
Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Safety engineers are responsible for identifying EMU safety concerns, providing assurance of safety papers associated with manifested EMU hardware, providing assurance to the certification of EMU hardware, monitoring real-time EMU parameters during ISS EVAs, and supporting anomaly troubleshooting and resolution as necessary. These functions are performed in direct support of the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) Directorate (NA) and the NASA JSC EVA Office (FA). EMU S&MA engineers are expected to become intimately familiar with the design and operation of the EMU, the safety requirements the EMU project must follow in support of the ISS Program, and the supporting FMEA, CILs, Hazard Reports, Procedures, and Certification data for the EMU system. EMU S&MA engineers are responsible for representing the safety position or informing the S&MA Representative of the safety position at various S&MA and XA boards and panels. Extensive oral and written communications are expected to occur with multiple layers of SAIC and NASA management, including briefings of EMU risks to NASA Headquarters Office of S&MA (OSMA). EMU Safety engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the EMU engineering community.
EMU Safety engineers are expected to provide the assurance roll in current efforts by the ISS Program to update EMU Hazard Reports and FMEA/CIL. This will include occasional travel, will require knowledge of general system safety methodologies for hazard analysis, and will require a thorough understanding of ISS Program requirements for the safety review process.
EMU Safety engineers are required to complete a training/certification curriculum, and once certified, serve as mentor to other EMU Safety or cross-training personnel during their on-the-job training. Additionally, EMU Safety engineers will pursue certification in the secondary discipline of EVA Quality Engineering (QE), and complete all necessary training/certification curriculum. Once completed, the EMU Safety engineer would be considered "cross-trained" in EVA QE and may be asked on occasions to perform tasks such as anomaly documentation/resolution, test readiness reviews, development of GMIPs, review of drawings, review of open items, and assessment of hardware deliverables.
Required Education/Background:
• Bachelors of Science in Engineering. Mechanical or Aerospace preferred.
• Candidate must be a US Citizen
Required skills:
• 2-3 years of experience working with EMU or space suit systems.
• Familiar with NASA, DOD, or other industry safety, reliability, and quality processes.
• Must possess excellent oral or written skills.
• Must possess good interpersonal skills.
• Self-starter, self-motivated.
• Working knowledge of Space Station hardware and hardware processes, specifically the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU).
• Experience supporting real-time EVA/EMU operations, ground testing, and/or crew training.
• Ability to master S&MA and Engineering processes for the certification of EMU equipment.
• Must be willing to travel (< 5%, domestic).
Desired Education/Experience:
• Working knowledge of International Space Station (ISS) hardware, airlock/EMU systems, their interaction, and their operations.
• Experience in the development of spacesuit systems, other critical space hardware, or procedures and flight rules for spacesuit system operations.
• Development of Safety or Reliability related products such as hazard reports, FMEAs, and Fault Trees.
• Experience in complex programs related to Manned Space Flight at NASA.
• Proficient at independent study and data gathering.
• Experience as technical lead.
• Experience in environmental control and life support, thermal control or structural and mechanical systems engineering.
• Familiar with human factors and medical-related conditions as they apply to EMU design and operations.
• Experience with real-time CORE room or MER/MCC support of EVA/EMU operations.
